From Pre-Med to Public Innovation: Finding My Path to Impact

By: Lauren Barry

When I started college, I thought the only way to make a direct impact in the public sector was to become a doctor. However, I found through my classes that my personal impact could have larger ripples somewhere else. After a year in biochemistry, I took a social entrepreneurship class that completely reframed things for me. I discovered I could bring together the areas I loved, like science, psychology, business, and economics, into a toolkit for solving broader challenges. I thrive collaborating across those areas, combining what I knew to create something new.

College gave me the chance to experiment, shift directions, and realize there was more than one way to make an impact. Social entrepreneurship felt like a cross-sector hub, giving me the flexibility to work across sectors and create change in different ways. It ultimately led me to discover NobleReach, where I could carry that mindset into public service and focus on building solutions that do not just treat symptoms but transform the systems behind them.

I had always wanted a mission-driven career, but I did not know what that looked like or even that it had a name. When I took Rollins’ Innovation for Impact course, it clicked for me. This middle ground between government, business, and innovation was not just possible, it was essential. NobleReach stood out because it creates the very environment I had been searching for: a place where entrepreneurial thinking and public service come together. Becoming a Scholar means I get to learn, collaborate, and contribute at that intersection while building a career rooted in both purpose and impact.

In my career, I want to tackle the complex challenges that shape people’s daily lives in interconnected ways. My sister has type 1 diabetes, which gave me a front-row seat to the healthcare system and how diabetes education connects to broader areas like climate resilience, policy, and tech. I definitely do NOT know the precise problem I’ll end up dedicating my career to, but I know my why. I want to be part of building equitable solutions that shape future systems and I feel so lucky to be on this path, excited to keep learning, growing, and diving in wherever I can.

That’s exactly why I’m so excited to be a Growth Associate at the MiamiDade Innovation Authority (MDIA). MDIA is tackling real, concrete challenges through its Public Innovation Challenges: from improving affordable housing access using tech and data to enhance transportation. These are the types of issues I want to work on: community centered. I can’t wait to jump in, help drive partnerships, explore innovative solutions, and power change where it matters most.
