Connecting with Colleagues in Oklahoma City

By: Joann Hong

One of my favorite parts of being immersed in the local community through my placement with the City of Oklahoma City has been the team of colleagues I get to work with every day. From the very beginning, they have been welcoming, supportive, and genuinely invested in helping me learn and grow. Entering a new professional environment, especially within a government setting, can feel intimidating, but my team created a space where I felt comfortable asking questions and taking initiative.

Interacting with my colleagues has significantly expanded my perspective, both professionally and personally. Many of them come from diverse educational and career backgrounds, and hearing about their different paths into public service has shown me that there is no single “right” way to build a meaningful career. Some transitioned from the private sector, others have spent their entire careers in public service, and each brings a unique lens to the work they do. Observing how they approach challenges, decision-making, and collaboration has taught me the importance of adaptability, patience, and clear communication. I have also learned how much thoughtful planning and teamwork goes into even the smallest city initiatives, which is something I had never fully considered before this experience.

What stands out most is their willingness to mentor me and include me in meaningful conversations. No question ever feels too small, and they consistently encourage curiosity and growth. Through daily interactions, meetings, and project discussions, I have gained a deeper appreciation for public service and the responsibility that comes with serving a community. Their dedication has reshaped how I view local government, not just as an institution, but as a group of people who genuinely care about the city and its residents.

I greatly appreciate how my team has helped shape both my professional growth and my perspective on community impact. The relationships I have built and the lessons I have learned from my colleagues have made this experience not only educational, but truly transformative.
